Day 1001

At 52, it’s really, really hard to develop new habits, and just as hard if not harder to drop old habits. Yesterday I hit 1,000 days since my last alcoholic drink. I think its fair to say there's a good chance I've successfully created a new habit.

I looked forward to hitting 1,000 days for months. Yet, when I woke up yesterday morning in a small roadside motel just outside of Algonquin Park, Ontario, Canada with my 9-year old son Bo sleeping soundly next to me, I knew that day 1,000 was going to be just like any other day. Other than the 7 hours of driving left for us to get home to Hanover and a couple of phone calls along the way, the day would be uneventful.

So today is day 1001. Do I just start the count over and now try to get to 2,000 days? Or do I layer in a +1 activity. If I am able to resist drinking for nearly 3 years, there must be something else worthwhile I can add to my daily routine that will serve me well.

Perhaps its writing in this blog. Or maybe its not eating ice cream. Both of those actions are candidates as of now because I did write in this blog and I did not eat ice cream! Day 1 complete.

Onward.
